Plus, teens who are under significant stress &#8212; from college applications, to sports, to competiton for grades &#8212; are at an <em>even greater risk for depression.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Depression in teenagers \u00a0is a serious\u00a0problem and can lead to a host of issues, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>poor school performance,<\/li>\n<li>withdrawal from social activities,<\/li>\n<li>low\u00a0self esteem,<\/li>\n<li>eating disorders,<\/li>\n<li>poor sleeping habits, and even<\/li>\n<li>suicide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>How parents can help<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Stop overscheduling.\u00a0<\/strong>Kids are expected to pay attention in school for seven hours, excel at extracurricular activities and sports, come home, finish homework, and go to bed,\u00a0then\u00a0do it all again the next day with no downtime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0Play!<\/strong>\u00a0Younger kids will do this naturally, but older kids may forget how to simply play.\u00a0Some ideas include: riding your bikes, throwing around the baseball, wrestling and hiking..<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0Catch up on the ZZZs.<\/strong>\u00a0Sleep is vital for everyone, regardless of age. Proper rest helps\u00a0minimize stress, boost moods, and even improve school performance, Creating a restful bedroo environemnt (no electronics!) is crucial.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Manage\u00a0parental strees.<\/strong>\u00a0Stress is really contagious!<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0Start the morning off right.<\/strong> Disorganization is a major contributor to stress ,levels for everyone in the house. Prepare the night before for the next day.
