Here are some facts you might not know:<\/p>\n<p>1. Columbus Day is traditionally celebrated on the second Monday of October.<\/p>\n<p>2. The holiday remembers Christopher Columbus\u2019 arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492.<\/p>\n<p>3. Columbus Day is often a controversial holiday, because the European settlement in the Americas led to the demise of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n<p>4. Christopher Columbus is often portrayed as the first European to sail to the Americas and as \u201cthe discoverer of the New World.\u201d There is abundant evidence, however, that the first Europeans to sail across the Atlantic were Viking explorers from Scandinavia.<\/p>\n<p>5. Not all parts of the United States celebrate Columbus Day. It is not a public holiday in California, Nevada and Hawaii. And, in South Dakota Columbus Day has been replaced by Native Americans\u2019 Day\u00a0while in Berkley, California\u00a0Indigenous People\u2019s Day\u00a0is celebrated.<\/p>\n<p>6. Columbus Day originated as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and was first held in San Francisco in 1869. The first state-wide celebration was held in Colorado in 1907.<\/p>\n<p>7. Columbus Day become a holiday across the United States in 1937.<\/p>\n<p>8.
