Did you know that your child may lose nearly half <\/em>of his school year math progress in the summer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent research points to a troubling trend: Summer learning loss increases as students progress through middle school.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Careful analysis<\/a> by the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) shows that in the summer following third grade, students lose nearly 20 percent of their school-year gains in reading and 27 percent of their school-year gains in math. But four years later, after seventh grade, students lose on average 36 percent of their school-year gains in reading and 50 percent of their school-year gains<\/strong> in math.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs kids grow less and less during the school years, they are still seeing the same summer drop\u2014so they are losing proportionately more,\u201d said Megan Kuhfeld, a research scientist at NWEA who authored the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s process that for a moment. A student might lose nearly <\/strong>half or more <\/strong><\/em>of the progress he\u2019s made during the school year\u2014 just for taking a break from the routine of daily school. <\/strong>And research indicates that this slide may get steeper <\/em>with each year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
