{"id":28855,"date":"2019-03-13T21:15:17","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T01:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.backtobasicslearning.com\/?p=28855"},"modified":"2019-05-29T18:40:58","modified_gmt":"2019-05-29T22:40:58","slug":"no-side-doors-to-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/backtobasicslearning.com\/no-side-doors-to-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"No side doors to learning"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By now, you\u2019ve all seen the headlines.<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By now, you\u2019ve likely shaken your head in disbelief, or maybe struck a desk in anger.<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">On Tuesday, March 12, at least 50 people were charged in what is being described as the biggest college admissions scandal ever prosecuted by federal authorities, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/education\/college-coaches-charged-in-admissions-bribery-case-in-federal-court\"> reporting<\/a> in just about every major news outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I watched this afternoon as a few high school students read the LA Times\u2019 clear, concise<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-college-admissions-fraud-scheme-20190313-story.html\"> reporting<\/a> on this story. As pages turned and pencils underlined text, I could tell that the students were getting angrier and angrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery paragraph\u2026 just gets worse,\u201d a talented senior said, tearing at the corners of her photocopy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe she was describing the half million parents spent to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-college-admissions-fraud-scheme-20190313-story.html\">reserve spots on USC\u2019s crew team<\/a> for students who had never rowed in a race. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe it was the parents who<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/education\/exam-cheaters-exploited-rules-for-students-with-disabilities\"> had their children<\/a> \u201cpurport to have learning disabilities\u201d so they could obtain medical documentation, then fly to test centers where expert test-takers would doctor their exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or the pay-to-play cheating\u2014 anywhere from $200,000 to $6.5 million that parents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-college-admissions-fraud-scheme-20190313-story.html\">invested in bribes<\/a> to coaches, alterations to test scores, online classes, and other dishonest strategies\u2014 that an admissions consultant was able to disguise as charitable donations so parents could write off their contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My student was right. The more you read, the picture gets bleaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of us are shaking our heads because we don\u2019t know how to fix this. The problem feels huge, systemic, and complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But maybe there is one small place we can start. One stance we can make\u2014 one that a small education services company in Nationwide has been taking, fiercely, for over 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Back to Basics, we\u2019ve looked at the marketing strategies for many of our peers, and we\u2019ve discovered there\u2019s a trend: <strong>Lots of tutoring services offer guarantees.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>\u201cWe guarantee an increase of at least 270 points or 1500 total score, or more!\u201d<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>\u201cIf your child completes our program and doesn\u2019t improve by at least 150 points, we\u2019ll provide you with additional tutoring for free!\u201d<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>\u201cWe guarantee your score will increase by at least 160 SAT points or 4 ACT points on the real test!\u201d<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>\u201cIf your child does not increase their SAT score by 200 points, you get your money back.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Guarantee. <\/em><\/strong>Interestingly, that\u2019s a word we\u2019re reading in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/file\/1142876\/download\"> criminal complaint<\/a> that\u2019s making headlines this week. William Singer, the founder of a college-prep business who authorities say was the architect of the criminal scheme, described to how his guarantee worked to one parent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cMy families want a guarantee. So, if you said to me \u2018here\u2019s our grades, here\u2019s our scores, here\u2019s our ability, and we want to go to X school\u2019 and you give me one or two schools, and then I\u2019ll go after those schools and try to get a guarantee done\u2026 And you make a financial commitment. It depends on what school you want, may determine how much that actually is. But that\u2019s kind of how the side and back door work.\u201d<\/em><br><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>At Back to Basics, our staff wonders how our peers can honestly guarantee higher scores.
