Yet, many don\u2019t realize it and simply never prepare for the SAT beyond a few late night cram sessions or half-hearted attempts at online practice exams. <strong><em>Top students,<\/em> however, know that SAT scores do matter.\u00a0And depending on the college, <em>SAT scores can matter lot<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While strong academics are still the foundation of admissions counselors\u2019 selection criteria, a stellar SAT score \u2014 or a dismal one \u2014 can make or break a student\u2019s chances at a \u201creach college.\u201d In fact, according to Peterson\u2019s, one of the most accurate sources for school listings, scholarships, and admissions information, \u201cYour SAT scores aren\u2019t generally the only deciding factor for getting in, but they do matter more to some colleges than others\u2026 There are a few schools that have begun to place less emphasis on test scores, but this isn\u2019t the case for the majority of schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, while an outstanding SAT score won\u2019t guarantee acceptance into Georgetown, Princeton or Duke\u2026\u00a0 it can help.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to improve SAT scores? <em>Proper preparation is essential<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Improving an SAT score isn\u2019t easy. It takes hard work, studying, and lots (and lots!) of practice questions.<\/p>\n<p>But, practice without guidance can be futile. Some students opt to take the test multiple times in the hopes of increasing scores \u2014 or combining superscores. Experience with the test alone will not boost score much. And, students can fall victim to test fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ishan Puri, the author of <em>The Applicant: An Insider\u2019s Guide to the College Admissions Process<\/em>, \u201cStudents often ask us how many times is the optimal number. The most we recommend is 3 attempts\u2026.We recommend students take\u00a0<em>at least 3 months\u00a0<\/em>in between tests to get adequate time to prepare. In our experience, raising your score significantly in less time than that is possible but not highly probable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The SAT is scheduled for <b>Saturday<\/b>,\u00a0<b>December<\/b>\u00a01.
