Yet, many don\u2019t prepare for it beyond a few late night cram sessions or half-hearted attempts at online practice exams. Contrary to popular (and somewhat wishful) thinking, SAT scores and SAT prep do matter. <em>Sometimes, a lot.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While strong academics are still the foundation of admissions counselors\u2019 selection criteria, a stellar SAT score \u2014 or a dismal one \u2014 can make or break a student\u2019s chances at a \u201creach college.\u201d In fact, according to Peterson\u2019s, one of the most accurate sources for school listings, scholarships, and admissions information, \u201cYour SAT scores aren\u2019t generally the only deciding factor for getting in, but they do matter more to some colleges than others\u2026 There are a few schools that have begun to place less emphasis on test scores, but this isn\u2019t the case for the majority of schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, an outstanding SAT score won\u2019t guarantee acceptance into Harvard, Princeton or Yale\u2026 but it can help.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How students can improve SAT scores through SAT prep<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Improving an SAT score isn\u2019t easy. It takes hard work, studying, and lots of practice questions.<\/p>\n<p>Some students, however, opt to take the test multiple times in the hope of increasing scores \u2014 or combining superscores \u2014 simply through experience. This is not a sound strategy and can actually backfire, resulting in testing fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ishan Puri, the author of The Applicant: An Insider\u2019s Guide to the College Admissions Process, \u201cStudents often ask us how many times is the optimal number. The most we recommend is 3 attempts\u2026.We recommend students take <em>at least 3 months <\/em>in between tests to get adequate time to prepare. In our experience, raising your score significantly in less time than that is possible but not highly probable.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The first fall SAT is Oct 6, 2018.
