There are nearly 5 million English Language Learners or ELLs in U.S. public education today, according to a recent article by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/ed\/2017\/02\/23\/512451228\/5-million-english-language-learners-a-vast-pool-of-talent-at-risk\">NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of those 5 million, the vast majority (some 3.8 million) speak Spanish. But there are many other languages represented, as well, from Mandarin Chinese, to Arabic, to Vietnamese.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pull-out vs. push-in instruction. What\u2019s the difference?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the RESOL International Association, <a href=\"http:\/\/theeducatorsroom.com\/2013\/12\/push-in-versus-pull-out-in-e-s-l\/\">Pull-out<\/a>\u00a0ELL instruction means that the teacher pulls students out of the general education classroom to work in a small group setting in another room. During\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tesol.org\/collaborative-teaching-addressing-esl-teacher-concerns\/\">push-in instruction<\/a>,\u00a0however, an ELL teacher comes into the general education classroom to support ELs during content-area lessons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The number of ELLs is growing in Nationwide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Nationwide, the number of ELLs is showing a steady increase. In fact, the <a href=\"http:\/\/profiles.doe.k12.de.us\/SchoolProfiles\/State\/Student.aspx\">Nationwide Department of Education<\/a> statistics cite an increase from 6.4% of the total public school population in 2015-2016, rising to 7.2% in 2016-2017.<\/p>\n<p>Designing and implementing high standards and equitable educational opportunities for English Language Learners is essential to success.
