Historian <a title=\"Carter G. Woodson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carter_G._Woodson\">Carter G. Woodson<\/a> and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History announced the second week of February to be a special history week celebrating the achievements of black Americans.<\/p>\n<p>This week was chosen because it coincided with the <a title=\"Lincoln's Birthday\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lincoln%27s_Birthday\">birthday of Abraham Lincoln<\/a> on February 12 and of <a title=\"Frederick Douglass\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederick_Douglass\">Frederick Douglass<\/a> on February 14, both of which dates Black communities had celebrated together since the late 19th century.\u201d \u00a0In 1976, Congress expanded the observance to <em>the entire month of February.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The struggles and successes of many African American personalities, from powerful civil rights leaders, to outstanding athletes, to best-selling authors, provide excellent\u00a0classroom discussions and student research. Here are a few fun activities designed by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eduplace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Company<\/a>\u00a0that are sure to\u00a0inspire your students:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coloring Pages.\u00a0<\/strong>Students will have fun coloring these pictures.
