W. Bush declared the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month, thereafter commonly referred to as Native American Heritage Month.<\/p>\n<p>But, the observance has roots that go back far earlier.\u00a0The first American Indian Day was actually declared on the second Saturday in May 1916 by the governor of New York.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to honor Native Americans during\u00a0National Native American Heritage Month<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the National Congress of American Indians, &#8220;The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people.
